The BEST Exercises for Your Back

Have you ever wondered what the most effective ways to build back muscles are? There’s so many exercises to choose from that it can be confusing to know exactly which ones will make your back stronger. Here’s a list of the most effective and proven back exercises that will strengthen your back and help build those wide barn door lats you always wanted, and help avoid back problems such as sciatic nerve problems.

Over the last 16 years, I’ve done just about every back exercise. Granted, not all the variations, heck, I thought I knew them all but I’m continually shocked to learn a few new movements that make me sore again like a teenager who hits the weights for the very first time (breaks into Top 80′s song by Madonna)….

After doing many back exercises myself, the most effective back exercises you can do are the following:

* Assisted wide-arm chin up (or regular pull ups)

* Wide-arm lat pull downs
* Close-grip lat pull downs
* Dumbbell rows
* Wide-arm cable rows
* Close-grip cable rows

More important than that…

In that order! That’s right. Not only are those a list of the most effective back exercise but they are in order of overall back development importance. Re-read this section again until it soaks in. While you might have 10,000 exercises to choose from, not all of them will be as effective in making your lats so wide it will be hard to walk thru the door.

If you want big barndoor lats, then pull ups are the king. Followed by barbell rows. You’ll get a thick, strong back just with pull ups. Add in the barbell rows and you are doing the exercises most professionals do.

You will probably see a lot of males/females on the cable row machine. And much like squats, you’ll only see a handful of people who can or will do pull ups on a regular basis.

Those are the ones who will have bigger and better developed backs then the cable rowers or the people who use those machines week after week. There’s absolutely nothing wrong at all with variety but a common mistake so many people make is sticking with lesser known exercises and completely missing out on the foundational exercises.

Hopefully you know that if you want the best leg development possible, then you cannot beat squats. Just like squats hit all the muscle of the leg, pull ups will work all the muscles of the back.

If anybody has ever told you that you ‘have a hole in your back.’ They won’t after you start including these in your weekly line up.

Even with rowing movements, you can row to the stomach for a completely different focus on muscle then if you row to the chest or row to the chin.

It’s all back but the variety will really stimulate the area. Next time you do any rowing movements, think about where the bar is going. Lower, middle or higher. Each variation will help with development and keep you from hitting that dreaded plateau!

Not only will your back become stronger but you’ll experience full development. That’s exactly what you want to do. Variety and sticking with the basics.

What is Sciatic Nerve Pain?

The sciatic nerve pain is also known as sciatica. It is the pain in the leg along with possible tingling, numbness and weakness that travels from the lower back down through the buttock traversing the path of the sciatic nerve.

The most common cause of sciatic nerve pain is a direct trauma to the nerve, usually due to an injection that is given directly given into the buttocks. Prolonged external pressure on the nerve or pressure from the internal body structures can also lead to the pain. Another common cause that can cause pressure on the sciatic nerve is when the pelvis bone is fractured or other similar trauma occurs on the buttocks or thigh. Systemic diseases like diabetes too can damage the sciatic nerve. A ruptured lumbar disc can cause symptoms that can simulate the symptoms of the sciatic nerve dysfunction. This damage leads to the slowing down and gradually preventing the conduction of impulses through the nerve.

The Sciatic Nerve

The largest nerve in the body is the sciatic nerve that is responsible for providing the sensory and motor functions to the lower parts of the body. The nerve provides sensation to the back of the thigh, lower part of the leg and on to the sole of the foot.

Causes – Sciatic Nerve Pain

Some of the common causes of the sciatic nerve pain are:

  • Osteophytes: are the additional bone growths that form at the edge of the joints. These bone growths can rub the sciatic nerve causing pain and inflammation.
  • Spondylolisthesis: is the condition wherein one vertebra slips forward above the vertebrae below it. This leads to the distortion of the spinal canal and results in the nerve roots of the sciatic nerve to be compressed.
  • Herniated Disk: If the outer layer of the intervertebral disk becomes weak or damaged, then the soft center of the disk can protrude out which is known as the herniated disk. These disks can damage any of the 5 origins of the sciatic nerve. Further, chemicals that leak from the center of the disks can also cause inflammation of the nerve.
  • Piriformis Syndrome: is an uncommon cause of the sciatic nerve disease. Piriformis is a muscle that lies deep in the buttocks and helps is the rotation and stabilization of the hip. When a person suffers from the piriformis syndrome, the piriformis muscle swells up. This results in the compression of the sciatic nerve present under it.

Treatment – Sciatic Nerve Pain

Majority of the people who suffer from sciatica get better with time with the help of non-surgical treatment which includes one or a combination of the medical or alternative treatments and is usually accompanied with some form of exercise and stretching. The main goal of this kind of treatment is to provide immediate and long term relief and prevention future recurrence of the condition.

But, some people who suffer from more severe cases need surgical intervention. These kind of surgeries are designed to help relieve both the pressure and inflammation and are suggested by doctors if the sciatic nerve pain is very severe and non-surgical treatments have not provided any relief. The traditional treatment is an open back surgery, but this kind of surgery comes with high risks and many related complications. An alternative form of treatment available these days is using laser technology, which is minimally invasive. But, this form of treatment is recommended to people who are suffering with a herniated or a bulging disc that is pressing against the sciatic nerve. Excess disc material is removed which helps alleviate the sciatica pain via microdiscectomy or discectomy.

Pregnant women too suffer from sciatica. This is because the sciatic nerve runs under the uterus and the growing baby can put pressure on it. The best possible remedy is to lie on the side opposite to that of the pain. This will help relieve the pressure on the nerve. Further, lifting heavy weights and standing for ling periods of time should be avoided. Avoiding heat and cold alternatively can also help reduce the pain. Swimming can help ease the discomfort to a large extent. But do consult the doctor before you start swimming. The doctor can also suggest some more light exercises that can help ease the pain.

Sciatic Nerve Pain – What are the Symptoms and Causes?

Sciatica or sciatic nerve pain is a term often used to describe all sorts of back pain. In fact, less than 5% of people who suffer from lower back pain will have sciatica.

Sciatica is caused by a sciatic nerve irritation. This is most commonly caused by a disc bulge in the lower back.

What is the sciatic nerve?

To understand this you need to have a bit of an idea about human spine anatomy. The spine is made up of large bones called vertebra. These bones are separated from one another by spinal discs. Each vertebra overlaps the next at the back to form a joint called a facet joint.

symptoms of sciaticaRunning down through the middle of the spine is a channel called the spinal canal, its here that the spinal cord sits. The spinal cord is the main structure that passes messages from our brains to our bodies.

At each vertebra the spinal cord braches out to form a nerve root, these nerve roots leave the spine via a gap between each vertebra and then bundle together to form much larger nerves.

In the legs there are two main, large nerves, the femoral nerve at the front and the sciatic nerve at the back. The sciatic nerve passes down through the buttock area into the back of the thigh and leg.

What causes sciatic nerve pain?

The most common cause of sciatica is a disc bulge. The disc is a very misunderstood structure; it has been blamed for back pain ever since it was discovered. Over the years we have started to believe that the disc is a really weak and vulnerable structure.

The term slipped disc makes it sound as if it can slip about inside. In truth the disc cant slip anywhere, it is firmly fixed at the top and at the bottom to the vertebrae above and below.

The disc can and does cause problems however. Sometimes the central area of the disc bulges, usually backwards and sideways. This can cause an irritation of the nerve root as it leaves the spine. Occasionally the bulge is severe enough to actually squash or trap the nerve but this is fairly rare.

When the nerve is irritated by the disc bulge it can become inflamed. Remember what it feels like to hit your finger with a hammer or catch it in a door for a moment. Following the nasty sharp pain you are left with a dull ache. The finger may become red and swollen; there may be some heat or warmth there. After a while, those symptoms settle and everything gets back to normal. Its very similar with the sciatic nerve. It becomes very sore and can give you a lot of pain, even though it is not actually trapped or squashed.

An important thing to know is that many people have disc bulges and have no symptoms at all.

There are some other conditions that can cause sciatic nerve pain but they are much less common. These include degenerative disc disease, severe osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis. Fractures, tumours and infection can also cause sciatica.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

If someone has true sciatica then they often have pain in the legs, usually in the buttock, back of the thigh or calf. There may also be pins and needles and numbness in parts of the leg.

In severe cases the leg may feel weak and the strength may be reduced. Often, disc bulges cause no back pain at all; the symptoms are felt only in the legs.

Why are so many people given the diagnosis of sciatica?

Very often, as soon as anyone has any lower back or leg symptoms they are told that have sciatica. However, there are other things that can cause leg pain; a strained facet joint for example can cause pain in the buttock and thigh. But if the sciatic nerve is not irritated then it is not sciatica.

The best way to tell if it is sciatica is to undergo a series of test that your physiotherapist or doctor can perform. These simple clinical tests will be enough to identify if the problem is an irritated sciatic nerve.

I want to talk to you about physical therapy for sciatica pain relief. This problem can be quite challenging for most people. The pains are often unbearable and you find yourself constantly watching how you move, so you hopefully don’t cause anymore pain.

I wanted to take the time to talk to you about physical therapy for sciatica pain relief and other treatment methods for this very painful condition. This is a very challenging condition because it seems to follow you everywhere. It doesn’t matter if you’re going for a walk, or sitting in a chair reading the newspaper. It just has a way of causing pain. I want to share some things you can do to have sciatica pain relief.

  • Acupuncture – This is a method based on Eastern medicine. There hasn’t been much in the way of science, but if it works for you than good. The problem I see is that it doesn’t offer a permanent solution. You’ll have to continue going back and paying for treatment.
  • Anti-inflammatory Medication – I don’t really consider this a solution, but it definitely designed for sciatica pain relief. It’s like the problem above; you have to pay on a regular basis just to numb the pain.
  • Chiropractic – This is a very expensive choice, but a lot of people think these people work very well. The problem I see is that it is expensive and it requires a lot of repeat treatments. You’ll be fine one day, than your back pain will be back, worse than before.
  • Surgery – This is definitely a last resort for sciatica pain relief and I wouldn’t even recommend it then. You don’t want to have surgery on the back, especially involving nerves. Most of the pain caused by sciatica is nerve irritation by the spine.
